6 ways to reduce stress and improve wellbeing

Stress is often viewed in a negative light, but the truth is that the ‘right’ amount of stress can motivate us – whether that’s helping to meet deadlines, overcome challenges or simply enhancing our focus and performance. The important point is to recognise the signs of when stress crosses the line into something unhealthy. Chronic stress can seriously impact both our mental and physical wellbeing, leaving us feeling drained and overwhelmed. Being aware of the signs—such as increased irritability or difficulty concentrating can help us identify when we need to act. By prioritising our self-care, practicing mindfulness, and seeking support if needed, we can effectively manage stress and maintain a healthy balance in our lives. Remember, it's all about embracing the positive aspects of stress while ensuring it doesn’t negatively impact our overall wellbeing. In this journal, we’re looking at some ways to build resilience, stay grounded, and enjoy a more balanced lifestyle.
Embrace mindful moments
Mindfulness is such a useful tool for helping to ground and reset. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 technique: for one minute, pause and notice five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste. Or why not try a little bit of laughter yoga – a quick playful burst of laughter that helps lift your mood. It feels a bit strange at first, but it really works!
Switch up your routine
While having a routine can help you stay organised, breaking with the norm occasionally can lift your mood and reset your mind. Take a detour on your walk to work, explore a different part of town, or grab a coffee from somewhere new. These small changes can shake up your usual perspective and leave you feeling refreshed.
Take life offline
These days, we’re constantly connected to our phones, yet we’ve never been more disconnected from the ‘real’ world. Taking a break from your phone is honestly one of the best ways to reduce stress – even if it’s just for an hour a day. Try leaving your phone in a different room or introduce a rule where you don’t have your phone at the dinner table. Removing digital distractions not only helps you unwind, but it makes you more engaged and present in the moment.
Appreciate the little things
Spend a few minutes each day appreciating what’s around you. Take notice of little things like the sound of rain, the comfort of a favourite chair, or the taste of your tea. This short practice grounds you, reduces stress, and builds a sense of calm. It’s a simple yet powerful habit for reducing stress and re-centering yourself.
Practice a power pose
Your body language can have a big effect on your mental state, and something as simple as a power pose can bring some much-needed confidence. Try the “Wonder Woman” stance: stand tall, place your hands on your hips, take a few deep breaths, and feel your posture shift your mindset. This technique reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and can give you a quick boost of resilience when you need it most.
Don’t be too hard on yourself
Wellbeing is about more than big resolutions; it’s about small, achievable goals. Focus on habits that align with your lifestyle, whether it’s drinking more water, taking a daily walk, or eating more fresh foods. Each small win builds a sense of achievement and adds up to lasting change. Go easy on yourself and remember a little bit of progress is better than no progress at all.
