What is CBD and why is it good for my skin?

It's a question we're often asked, so we thought we'd share a little more about the wonder plant that powers our range of skincare and aromatherapy.

What is CBD and why is it good for my skin?

We use over 50 pure plant extracts to power our range of skincare and aromatherapy solutions – and at the heart of many of our formulations is our own, premium quality CBD Isolate. But what exactly is CBD? – and why is it so good for your skin?

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol and is the naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. One of the biggest misconceptions about CBD is that it can get you ‘high’. The compound responsible for the ‘high’ is called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and is not present in CBD products (in fact, it is illegal for products to contain THC, and brands must obtain a certificate of analysis (COA) that proves that THC – and other substances are not present in the CBD).

Why is CBD good for my skin?

CBD is far more than a fad ingredient – it’s backed by significant research and development and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to help alleviate a range of skin complaints. Here’s why you should consider adding CBD skincare to your daily ritual:

Anti-inflammatory properties

CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system to reduce inflammation which makes it especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin or conditions such as rosacea and eczema, helping to calm redness and ease irritation.

A powerful antioxidant

CBD is naturally rich in antioxidants which are vital for combating free radical damage, Free radicals are around us in our everyday life – from pollution to UV rays and cause premature ageing and dullness in your complexion. Antioxidants help neutralise these harmful molecules and keep your skin looking more youthful and radiant.

Rebalances problem skin

If your skin is particularly oily or acne-prone, than CBD is the answer to your skincare prayers. Unlike some ingredients that can strip the skin of its natural oils, CBD helps to regulate sebum production, keeping your skin clear without drying it out, which makes it suitable for both oily and combination skin types.

Soothes and moisturises all skin types

CBD is a fantastic moisturiser, thanks to its hydrating but non-greasy profile. When combined with other plant based hydrators, such as hyaluronic acid it’s properties are even more effective. CBD is also incredibly soothing – so it’s great for calming irritated skin.
