Natural remedies to boost immunity this Winter

Perhaps one of the most well-known herbs for winter wellness is Echinacea. Particularly useful at the first signs of a cold, it’s believed to stimulate white blood cell production, helping your body to fight off infections more effectively. Infuse dried echinacea in hot water and add a squeeze of lemon and a dash of honey or agave for a soothing drink.

Elderberry is a winter favourite for immune support as it’s packed with antioxidants, vitamin C and antiviral properties that help protect against colds and winter illnesses. Most health food stores have capsules, tea or syrup.

Rosehip is super rich in vitamin C, making it a perfect choice for immune support. This antioxidant-rich herb helps strengthen the immune system and protect against infections. You can find dried rosehips in most health food stores – simply steep them in hot water for a citrussy tea. Another good option is rosehip syrup. Try adding it to yogurt, porridge, or take simply from the spoon.

Ginger isn’t just for adding flavour to food – it’s also a potent anti-inflammatory, perfect if you’re suffering with a sore throat. Slice fresh ginger, boil in water and sweeten to taste with honey or agave – try adding a pinch of cinnamon for an extra kick.

Turmeric, known for its bright orange colour is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and can be used in so many ways – mix with milk and honey for a golden latte, add to soups, smoothies or curries, or take as a supplement. Try with black pepper to supercharge the benefits of turmeric.

And finally... a kitchen staple, Garlic is a powerful natural immune booster, known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties, helping you fend off colds and winter ailments. Add fresh garlic to soups, dressings – or even roast whole bulbs and spread on toast for a delicious snack. If you’re not keen on the taste (or smell!), give odourless garlic capsules a go instead.

By adding immune boosting herbs and plants to your winter routine, you can easily boost your body’s natural defences, so you can keep feeing your best through the winter months.
